Kiss might be the ultimate band in the name game, not only did each member change their name, but took on a new persona that included a nick name. The band once explained that the fans were the ones who ultimately chose their personas. Stanley became the "Starchild" because of his tendency to be referred to as the "starry-eyed lover" and "hopeless romantic". The "Demon" makeup reflected Simmons' cynicism and dark sense of humor, as well as his affection for comic books. Frehley's "Spaceman" makeup was a reflection of his fondness for science fiction and supposedly being from another planet. Criss became the "Catman" because of his rough upbringing in Brooklyn, NY where it was said he had nine lives.

In his early years of performance Lannerback used his mother's maiden name Malmsten (adding an E), and also wound up changing his first name to Yngwie in hopes that an audience from outside Sweden would be more likely to pronounce it correctly.

Most people know The Misfits got their band name from the last film Marilyn Monroe ever appeared in, but the stage names surrounding many Misfits members still remains a mystery. Jerry Only once explained after his surname was misspelled on the band's first single, Cough/Cool, he insisted that in the future he be credited as "Jerry, only Jerry." So Jerry Only quickly became his pseudonym, which he would continue to use for the rest of his career. Unfortunately, Glenn Danzig is not so quick to elaborate on his adopted name. During a 2005 interview, when asked about his stage name Glenn responded "It´s a personal reason and has to do with my family. Usually my family is off limits. I don´t give a fuck about who you are. I keep my family out of it. If you understand that and respect that – great; if not I could give two fucks. So how is that?"
Nergal
Real Name: Adam Michał Darski
Like a few other black metal bands, the Behemoth front man chose his stage name based on Babylonian Mythology. Nergal is a diety that represents a very particular aspect of death, one that is often and rightly interpreted as inflicted death. Nergal is also the god of plague and pestilence as well as being closely associated with warfare.

Kilmister was nicknamed Lemmy while attending school although he was unsure why. Some claim that it originated from the phrase "lemmy [lend me] a quid till Friday" because of his habit of borrowing money from people.

Real Name: Vegard Sverre Tveitan
Emperor started out as a very extreme satanic black metal band at the heart of the legendary church burnings in Norway. Even though Emperor stopped using corpse paint in 1993 because they felt the meaning was lost, and it became trendy, their use of stage names seemed to stick around. Vegard Sverre Tveitan started out in earlier bands as "Ygg" which is believed to be short for Yggdrasil, an immense tree that is central in Norse Cosmology. Later Tveitan chose the name Ihsahn while in Emperor, to this day the origin is still a mystery. During a 2009 interview Ihsahn had this to say concerning the name origin "I think that there are only three people on Earth who know that and I would like to keep it that way. It’s nothing too serious; it’s just that I have kept it as a secret for so many years (laughs)."
Cronos
Real Name: Conrad Lant
Once Guillotine changed their name to Venom, the next step was finding member names that suited what would become an extremely influential black/thrash band with endless Satanic references. Conrad took the name Cronos from the Greek mythology titan and had the following to say in an old interview concerning the subject of stage names. "We decided on those names very early on. I found a piece of paper recently from when the band first started, and on it were written Conrad Cronos, Jeff Mantas and Tony Abaddon. Come on, it would have been daft to be singing about Satan and demons, and all those dark things, and then for me to say, ‘Hello Jeff!’. We’d have felt like twats. That was always my problem with Ozzy. He’d sing about evil things and dark figures, then spoilt it all by going, Oh God, help me!’ Wrong! That was stopping one step short of where I wanted to take this band. We were prepared to go beyond the Hammer Horror of Black Sabbath.”
Avenged Sevenfold
Heavily influenced by bands who donned stage names, the entire band decided to choose their own as well.
Matthew Charles Sanders became M. Shadows because he thought of himself as "the darker character in the group".
Zachary James Baker became Zacky Vengeance because he wanted to get back at all the people from his youth that doubted his potential.
Brian Elwin Haner, Jr. became Synyster Gates and claims his name was created on a drunken drive through the park with the Rev.
James Owen Sullivan became The Rev. and according to an old magazine article, he originally wanted to be known as The Reverend Tholomew Plauge but it's not known why.
Marilyn Manson
Real Name: Brian Hugh Warner
Wanting to put two extremes together, all members of the band Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids chose their names by taking the first name of a famous pop icon, and last name of a serial killer. Brian Warner chose Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson.
